What’s in a Green Label? A Look at EcoLogo and the Green Seal
We care about clean, and that means knowing as much as we can about the cleaning products we use. What’s printed on labels shows us a product’s certifications. EcoLogo and Green Seal are the ones we rely on the most.
You may have already noticed the EcoLogo or Green Seal labels on your green cleaning products, both of which are internationally-recognized programs that ensure products meet stringent environmental requirements. But what’s the deal?
Canada’s EcoLogo – first out of the gate
The EcoLogo Program (also known as Environmental Choice) was created in 1988 by the Government of Canada, and has grown to be recognized as one of North America’s largest and most respected environmental certifications.
The program compares products in the same category based on rigorous and relevant criteria that reflect the entire lifecycle of each product. The EcoLogo is awarded only to products that are verified by an independent third party as complying with the criteria.
Some of the EcoLogo-certified products we use include: hand towels, hard surface cleaners, kitchen towels, hand cleaners, toilet tissue, urinal pucks, facial tissue, and garbage bags.
These products incorporate the best technologies on the market. For instance, the garbage bags we use are oxo-biodegradable, which means they’re broken down in the environment in a matter of months and years, as opposed to the hundreds of years it takes for traditional garbage bags.
Green Seal – the US follows suit
The Green Seal is another standard that has been around for nearly as long as EcoLogo. Since 1989, this American non-profit organization has been certifying goods and services that meet the highest standards of environmental quality and performance.
Many of the Enviro Chem products we use from Rochester Midland Corp. feature the Green Seal. In addition to making cleaning simple and organized, Enviro Chem are very environmentally friendly. Products that sport the Green Seal include their glass cleaner, “tough job” cleaner, hand soap, low-foam all-purpose cleaner, and tile & grout cleaner, just to name a few.
The EcoLogo and Green Seal are both very trustworthy labels that support our
Green Housekeeping practices. When we use the products we do, these labels help us feel confident that we’re using the most environmentally sound products that we can.
