Clustering Flies:  What are they and how do I keep them out of my office or home?

Business and homeowners are often inundated with flies in the late winter and spring.  As they hide from the cold and wake up to the warmer weather.

While they do not promote a health hazard, they are a nuisance.  They can leave stains on walls or fabrics resulting in Carpet/upholstery cleaning being required.. They can attract different bugs and beetles when they die off.

These flies tend to hide in the warm south and west sides of buildings.  When the weather warms, we often find them becoming more active in search of warmth and light.

Cluster Flies can enter your office or home through the tiniest cracks around door and window frames but also any unsealed openings. They can also enter through electrical, or cabling openings, pipes, or vents.

Try these to prevent an infestation:

  • Make sure all screens fit securely with no holes.
  • Weather strip doors and windows
  • Ensure caulking does not have cracks or crevices.
  • Install insect screen over vents, soffits etc.
  • Use Citronella fragrance.
  • Install Electric fly killers.
  • Use Fly boxes.

How do I get rid of them?

Cluster flies can be killed with a fly swatter but the do emit an unpleasant odour and can stain surfaces when squashed.  You can also release outdoors or vacuum them up.

Calling your local pest control company to set traps or even purchase your own at your local hardware store can help as well.

As these flies tend to head inside when the weather gets cooler, add checking your building or home over the coming summer months in preparation.

While us commercial cleaners are there to vacuum them up at night when we see them, this doesn’t solve the problem.  We can only help during our scheduled visits.  They will continue to come back until they head outside, or their point of entry is sealed.

We continue to care about our customers and their facilities. Working together we can solve an issues that arise. Check some of our other blogs on Spring Cleaning, Carpet Maintenance, and Germs.
